Microsoft 365 Roadmap Updates

The Microsoft 365 Roadmap changes constantly. That’s why each week, Planet distills the updates simply and clearly to keep you “In The Know.”

Commercial Priority Update

Week of July 30, 2026

Microsoft Purview DLP can now quarantine a sensitive file the instant a policy is triggered, moving it to a restricted, admin-controlled location and cutting off access for every user in real time. The file isn’t deleted it’s preserved for review and investigation while the exposure is contained immediately, not after someone gets around to responding. This closes the gap between detection and enforcement that let sensitive data sit exposed while admins scrambled to react. For SharePoint and OneDrive, that means a leaked contract, credential list, or PII file gets locked down automatically instead of continuing to spread. The feature is currently rolling out for Microsoft Purview DLP customers.

Microsoft Teams: Improved organization for muted and meeting chats

Microsoft Teams automatically organizes your chats with new built in sections that help reduce clutter and keep conversations easy to find. Muted chats (on by default) are grouped together in a dedicated area, while meeting chats (off by default) can be collected into a single section for quick access. You’re always in control, as each section can be turned on or off based on your preferences. The new Meeting chats section will replace the Meeting chats filter, that was previously available at the top of the chat and channel list. Updated July 20, 2026: We have temporarily rolled back this feature. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Outlook: New Copilot entry point in Classic Outlook

We’ve introduced a new experience for Copilot in the apps—a consistent entry point across apps that sits above your work and understands the context beneath it. Rather than scattering touchpoints across the interface, it anchors Copilot as one connected system across Microsoft 365, surfacing relevant actions that help you stay in flow. With this release, we are rolling out this new experience – already available across other Outlook endpoints, as well as in Word, Excel and PowerPoint – to classic Outlook.

Previously, installation changes made in the Microsoft 365 admin center only applied to Outlook and Microsoft 365, while changes made in the Teams admin center only applied to Teams. With this update, app and agent installation is unified across all supported surfaces, enabling a more consistent and streamlined admin experience.

These improvements help authors create richer page designs with greater confidence and consistency across desktop, mobile, and email experiences.

Run-only sharing enables makers to securely share autonomous agents with end users, allowing users to benefit from agent-driven automation without requiring edit permissions or ownership. This extends autonomous agent capabilities to a broader audience while maintaining governance and control.

Corporate communications teams now have a unified place to create, distribute, and measure their news without leaving the platform where their news content already lives. This feature applies only to Amplify users as of now. This is a complementary way to create lighter weight campaigns inside a SharePoint site as a way to organize your SharePoint news posts and benefit from campaign analytics directly from SharePoint.

Microsoft 365 admin center: Organizational Data – Granular access policy controls for custom attributes

We are introducing enhanced access policy management for Organizational Data in Microsoft 365. This update enables admins to release custom attributes to specific users or groups, rather than broadly to all employees or all managers. This provides a more conservative default approach for managing sensitive organizational data, while also supporting staged rollout of new attributes. Additionally, admins can configure whether leaders and managers are permitted to share non-public data with Workforce Insights delegates. This enhancement improves governance, flexibility, and control over organizational data access.

OneDrive: New Shortcuts folder option when adding shortcuts

OneDrive makes it easy to add shortcuts to the files and folders you use most. Now you can choose to keep those shortcuts neatly together in one place instead of mixed in with everything else. When you add a shortcut, you can send it to a dedicated “Shortcuts” folder rather than your OneDrive root. The folder is created automatically the first time you use it and is easy to spot, with a distinct color and building icon. The Shortcuts folder behaves like any other folder—move it, rename it, share it, or remove it whenever you like.

Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft 365): People Skills- removal and deletion admin control

A new admin control in the People Skills settings lets administrators permanently remove their organization’s People Skills data from the tenant. With this new control, organizations can delete their entire skills library along with all users confirmed, inferred, and imported skills data—giving them full control to offboard from People Skills in support of data governance and compliance needs.
Once deletion is initiated, skills will no longer appear on user profile cards or be used across Microsoft 365 skills-based experiences such as Copilot and Viva. The control is admin-only with no automatic changes.
